SYNOPSIS

LEBEN IN DER HERMITAGE ist ein einfühlsames Portrait über die Menschen, die in Russlands berühmtestem Museum arbeiten und über die großartigen Kunstwerke, die in dieser legendären St. Petersburger Institution zu finden sind. Aliona van der Horst lässt uns verschiedensten „Hermitage-niks“ begegnen, beispielsweise Olga Bogdanova, die für die Instandhaltung des riesigen Baus zuständig ist, der Ikonen-Expertin Alexandra Kostsova, der Museumswärterin Valentina Barbashova und dem Kunsthändler Vadim Kuptsov, der uns – wie noch viele andere Protagonisten des Streifens – seine ganz persönlichen Gründe dafür nennt, warum er den ehemaligen Palast von Katharina der Großen als „sein Zuhause“ bezeichnet. Ein liebvoller Film über Kunst und über Personen, die in einem Haus der Kunst Heimat und Zuflucht gefunden haben.

DIRECTORS STATEMENT

It all started with my friendship with Lyuba, a woman of 60, who works in the Hermitage. Her overwhelming commitment to the museum fascinated me and gave me the opportunity to get an insider's glimpse of museum life. As I found out, the vast majority of the museum employees shared this intense love for the Hermitage. Furthermore, I found out that the Hermitage mirrors the history of the last century: the Revolution, the terror of Stalin, the Second World War, the harsh post-Soviet years – all these events have left their mark on the museum.

In my documentary films, I always look at how the wheels of history at large influence the personal fate of individuals, and how they cope. The Hermitage served as an amazing place to see this happen, a place where the transcendental force of art is present in all aspects of history.
